there are angels
present
on earth.
they take different forms
i see them
in lower places
as well
as high.
sometimes
they are seated on the ground
weak from hunger
with their hands out
when we lock eyes
they entreat me
because they know
that i see.
yesterday
i was in my car
turning under and underpass
and there was a soul
asking for help…
i realized that i had no bills or change
and then he pointed to a prayer in Arabic script
that i have hanging
from the rearview mirror
to remind me of my duty
and i realize that i often carry
bottles of water
to hand out
when i see someone
who needs it.
but i knew that i had not
placed a supply in my car
that day
but I reached behind me and there was
a bottle in my bottle holder
i pulled it out and handed
it to the guest
even though it had been in a warm car overnight.
he received it with joy and relief
and immediately opened it and began to drink.
and then he raised his index finger
signaling his belief in the One God
and i was overwhelmed
by this sign…
i resolved to keep cold water
in my car as well as dollars and change
when i have it.
miracles happen often
although
we often miss them
and sometimes
God’s visitors on earth
are overlooked
in the hustle and the bustle
of life
and in our search for
the “niceties” in life.
but don’t forget
that angels
are among us
and if we say
we believe
we must walk
in
that
light
and if we don’t have anything
to give
we can acknowledge
each soul
with love—
whole or broken,
weak or strong,
in right
or
in wrong.
Angels
are
among
us…
