Raspberry Wool

raspberry wool

coat

and hat–

too hot

in San Francisco

for the day

after

Thanksgiving…

previous prayers

and city promenades

had led me

here

among the madly

shopping crowds

and the dreams

that realize

themselves

in city walking

ghosts,

and fantasies

of love.

Vibraphone. (For Maestro Bobby Hucherson)

that morning

when i

put on

Bobby Hutcherson

‘Pastoral’

and

you

heard it

through

the door…

i don’t know

where you are

now

a silent caller

from my past…

and she

went on

to Harvard

and

to greater things

as i knew she would

and i

went on

to better;

emerging

from the twilight

of girlhood

into the full agony

of love

and the life

that chose me.

there are no more

stolen kisses

and misunderstood

liaisons.

only competent

and plodding steps

forward

memories,

and no return.

yet

i

still

listen

to vibraphone

music

that lights

the heart

of a girl

still dreaming…

in the body

of an elder

with many

years.
