then
i
had nothing…
then,
i had
everything.
the strength
and the time
to wander
and learn,
the joy
and pain
of love
knotted
in my heart
for reference,
some sturdy prayers
behind me
and
beside me
for protection;
and acknowledgement
of the Divine
and His mysteries
giving order
to the chaos
of life.
what better way
to walk
stolidly
into
the unknown (to me)
moving
to the lyrics
of destiny…
coming now
to this day of
Grace,
knowing
and
redemption.

she spoke
into
my soul
with harmony,
and
understanding.
i fell in love
to her music
wrapped in
that ageless time
when i became
a girl-woman;
complete
with ceremony
and strife.
i felt
the truth
of every word,
the force
of every rhyme…
in a time
where there were
no teachers
to feed the hunger
of students
like me.
“Eli
and the
Thirteenth
Confession”
and its
many stories
and nuances.
…much later
she sang so simply
at
Great American
Music Hall
in the decade
of her death…
while i continued
to learn and teach:
a student/teacher
straddling
continents
and worlds
still seeking my place
in love,
womanhood
and
in faith.
