Aztec Beauty (and haiku)

tall you stood

like a sentry;

wearing

a cowry shell

necklace.

serious,

vigilant,

protective.

Aztec Beauty (haiku)

tall like a sentry

wearing a band of cowry
serious, strong, proud.

Woodstock

it was

the best

of times…

Head Shops

in Cambridge

music

on the Boston Commons.

warm summers

and cold desolate

winters;

Stokely

in Roxbury

Ramparts,

Black Panthers

in Oakland.

Olatunji

‘drumming with passion’;

Sun Ra,

Nina Simone

Ravi Shankar,

The Doors;

Mongo Santamaria in New York;

weddings

in Yellow Springs…

Amiri Baraka

at Emerson College.

all juxtaposed

into an experiential

odyssey.

thoughts,

broken paradigms

new constructs:

flowers,

guns,

spiritual awakenings,

sins, faith,

resistance, hope.

and young hearts broken,

smashed and pulverized

in the wake of Love,

whose name we called;

its power, its embrace,

its compelling force

bringing us

to our knees

before its Creator.

shifting our thoughts

and ways

changing our nights,

our days

beyond the mood

of the time

into the transcendental

realm

of

forever.

it was

the best

of

times…

Tariq

gentle you are;

that is how

i always see you.

young, back then

when we were learning

how to rebel

and be principled

in the struggle.

later as I saw you

older, established

and both of us

still active and present.

i run into people

in disparate places,

cities, coasts and continents away

from where i knew them.

and time, it has its impact too;

allowing us the space

to go the distance;

to stand firm;

and even

to remain gentle

like

you.
