Ancestral Articulations

for McCoy Tyner & Jimmy Heath
1.

McCoy:

he had been

the backbeat,

the grounding,

the upbeat

to all my music

of the times..

hypnotic,

arrogant,

composed.

we drove to see him

at Yoshi’s

just after i returned

from Senegal;

on a quiet night.

an epic performance

on his stellar work:

“Home”

with drums in syncopation,

rhythmic

cultural echoes

and nuances.

paying homage

to the spiritual iteration

of ‘jazz’

through instrument

melody

and rhythm.
2.
during
a stop-over

in New York:

The Heath Brothers

(Percy, Jimmy, Albert Tootie Kuumba)

playing

the Village Vanguard.

at the classic

third set;

we were all tired

but the brothers

did not

disappoint

and played

with alacrity,

unity,

harmony

and verve.

then it was time

to move into

the activities

of a Sunday morning:

for some church

or rest…

for me a JFK

flight to Ghana

where i

would witness

more miracles

of sound

and

sight.

and where

i would continue

to connect

myself

to my

ancestral

source.
