Epitaph

say:

she crawled

she walked

she stood;

say:

she wrote history/

herstory,

she lived it

and recounted it

in triumph

as well

as anger.

she wrote,

she rode,

she flew;

she touched down

on continents;

wandered streets

and alleyways…

she crossed

bridges,

oceans

and seas;

she soaked

her feet

in them;

she reveled

in beauty:

clothes,

people,

landscapes

and words;

she cooked

she ate,

she fed

she made love

and music

and poetry;

she taught

she read;

she told and retold

stories…

say:

she yielded

she resisted,

she blundered

she succeeded

she took

she gave;

she came

she left

her memory

stayed;

she wore

fedoras

and African wraps

hijab

and backward

baseball caps;

say:

she relished sunsets

at Maghrib*

and quiet

predawn

musings;

she knew

there was none

but One.

she laughed

she cried

she lived

she died.
